Mobapad’s Early Insights on the Switch 2: Verifying the Latest Information

On April 2024, Mobapad shared detailed information about the upcoming Switch 2 on our official WeChat account in China. Soon after, prominent media outlets such as WCCFTech and IGN picked up the information.

Now, with the official Switch 2 announcement video released by Nintendo on January 16th, we’ve taken the time to verify the details we previously shared based on this official video. Here’s what we’ve discovered

1. Joy-Con Update

The new Joy-Cons are larger in size, and their rail system has switched to a magnetic attachment method. The SL and SR shoulder buttons are now made of metal. The magnetic attachment uses electromagnetic technology, where the magnetic attraction is controlled by electrical current. A notable change is that on the sides of the Joy-Con, in addition to the usual L, ZL, R, and ZR buttons, each controller now features an extra button, and the right Joy-Con also has an additional function button below the HOME button.

Note: While we initially mentioned that SL and SR would be magnetically attached, it turns out they actually use physical magnets rather than electromagnetic ones. This was the only discrepancy found. All other details have been confirmed!

2. Game Card Compatibility

The Switch 2's game card slot is backward compatible with Switch 1 game cartridges. However, the new Switch 2 game cards are not compatible with the original Switch.
Confirmed: This information is accurate.

Confirmed: This update has been verified.

4. Display Upgrade

The Switch 2’s screen has been upgraded to 8 inches, with a 1080P resolution (according to official images).
Confirmed: This upgrade is accurate.

5. USB-C Port and 4K Output

The Switch 2 still features a USB Type-C port, which supports docking. The new dock has a slightly different, more rounded design but offers up to 4K output.
Confirmed: This feature has been confirmed as well.

6. Compatibility with Existing Controllers

One last detail that remains unconfirmed is whether the Switch 2 will support wireless connectivity for existing Joy-Con controllers and the Pro controller. It’s also uncertain whether it will continue to feature the ALPS dual-axis linear motor and HD rumble functionality. This information will only be verified once the Switch 2 is officially available for sale.
At this time, we can confirm that Switch 2 will support first-generation accessories for use in playing older games, but these controllers will not be compatible with new games on the Switch 2 (similar to how PS4 controllers can play PS4 games on a PS5 but not PS5 games).
Note: This is the only remaining detail that we cannot fully confirm yet.
