The Mobapad M6 HD is the BEST third-party Joycon alternative to date, outperforming the original Nintendo Joycons! It features Hall Effect sticks that are light, responsive, and durable, with concave thumbstick grooves and taller shafts for better comfort, especially for larger hands. The buttons are satisfying with clicky switches, and the controller's shape makes it much more comfortable, addressing the issues with the original Joycon's lack of grip and difficulty in using the right trigger and analog stick together during FPS games. The M6 HD solves these issues while remaining compact and ergonomic, making it the ideal Joycon design.
That being said, I'm primarily a PC gamer, and Nintendo's official Joycons have been problematic (even downright unusable) on Windows...but the Mobapad D1 USB Adapter appears to have FINALLY solved this!! Instead of requiring custom firmware, it connects each Joycon into one input within the adapter, allowing it to work on Windows, Android, and even Linux via Steam. This made the M6 HD ABSOLUTELY worth getting.
The only downside is that the D1 USB Adapter actually advertises that it supports the original Nintendo Joycons, but (after hands-on experience) does appear to work significantly better with the M6 HD itself. While the left Nintendo Joycon works perfectly, the right one experiences significant input delay beyond about 1 meter. This doesn’t affect the M6 HD, making it the better option, but official Joycons still work at close range which was still an unexpected nice-to-have. Overall, the D1 USB Adapter and M6 HD are a fantastic combination, and I hope future versions continue to improve!
In the interest of seeing the business and brand continue, the only substantive criticisms I can offer for improving the success of the product are to consider marketing the unique luxuries of gaming with split joycons, which have largely been an ability exclusive to the Nintendo platform thanks to the lack of firmware support beyond the Switch. It is always uniquely comfortable being able to play games casually with my hands in my hoodie pockets, or in any lounging position on my living room couch or even bedside, which is how my partner has played games on her switch for years and was never something I could get working until we discovered the Mobapad and the D1. It's niche, to be sure, but if marketed properly towards PC gamers and Android gamers, this COULD attract some serious attention!
To support this, I would consider selling a "starter kit" bundle that offers a very cheap charging method for those who don't own a Switch and a D1 Adapter.
For the mobile market, finding a way to bypass the need for the USB adapter to fuse the Bluetooth inputs via the Mobapad APP would be key, since so many phones still only have a single USB-C port. I would just try to create a mount accessory to try and allow a smartphone to behave as similarly to a Switch as possible!
